When the camera becomes the eye
Everyone has been talking about artificial intelligence (AI) since ChatGPT at the latest. However, the topic has been driving the industry for much longer. One company that has been successfully focussing on AI services for years is senswork. The Burghausen-based company was founded 13 years ago and secured an investment from BayBG a year and a half ago.
In the meantime, the number of employees has grown to 30. Its customers include renowned companies: Whether BMW, Siemens, Wacker or Siltronic - they all count on the systems from Burghausen when it comes to the camera-based inspection of components. The company has recently launched software called "Neuralyze" onto the market. senswork spent four years researching it at its Munich site.
The result is a "milestone", as senswork co-founder Rainer Obergrußberger puts it: the software can perform automatic AI-based inspection applications in industry. Specifically, this involves surface inspection, object recognition and classification of components. "The results that Neuralyze can achieve with a sufficient number of training images in such applications come amazingly close to the judgement of the human eye," says a delighted senswork employee.
This opens up completely new fields of application: The new technology not only significantly increases the efficiency of automatic optical inspection and makes it more robust, but also ensures that it can be used in food production or agriculture.
Other areas in which the image processing software is used include key industries such as the automotive and automotive supply industry, electronics and medical technology. Markus Schatzl, Head of the Innovation Lab in Munich, reveals the secret of Neuralyze's success: "The practical requirements that our colleagues encounter on a daily basis flow directly into the development process."
Incidentally, this process is not complete - instead, the company is continuing to focus on expansion: "We are focusing on AI and actively shaping the future of industrial image processing," emphasises Obergrußberger. Senswork now operates three locations in Germany and two international subsidiaries in the USA and Singapore.
The latter location was only recently opened. "Due to the high international demand and numerous systems already installed in Asia, we are developing a service centre there for our customers," explains Roman Rieger, Managing Director and co-founder of senswork. He is also very satisfied with the company's financial development. Without naming any figures, he emphasises: "This year's turnover exceeds our expectations and confirms our decision to invest strategically in AI."
